Patton Island Bridge
Completed in October 2002, the new $47.1 million, six-lane Patton Island Bridge over the Tennessee River will reduce congestion and improve safety and the quality of life in northwest Alabama. Prior to the opening of the new bridge, access across the river in the Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia areas was limited to a four-lane bridge completed in the 1930s and a narrow two-lane connector across Wilson Dam. Crashes on either of these older facilities created major disruption to traffic flow across the river. Plans for the new bridge began in 1974 with a study to determine the need for another river crossing in the area. In October 1994, construction began with the piers for the bridge. Subsequent projects every 2 to 3 years added the roadway decking and approaches. The completed Patton Island Bridge is actually two separate structures. One carries three lanes of northbound traffic and an attached pedestrian/bike pathway, while the other carries three lanes of southbound traffic. The bridges span the Tennessee River, Florence Canal, and Patton Island. The structures are 1,360 meters (4,456 feet) long, 18 meters (58 feet) wide, and rise 29 meters (94 feet) above the water. |

Wilson Dam Highway Bridge
Truck Traffic Restricted Across Wilson Dam April 2, 2003 FLORENCE, Ala. – Because of traffic safety concerns, TVA will limit truck traffic across Wilson Dam to vehicles with two axles beginning in mid-April. Trucks with more than two axles will be routed to the new Patton Island Bridge recently opened downstream of the dam. Listed as a historical landmark, Wilson Dam was designed and built nearly a century ago before large trucks were in widespread use. The bridge no longer meets current standards for roadway width and alignment. The road across the dam is narrow and has dangerous curves at the south end of the dam. The Alabama Department of Transportation relocated State Highway 133 from Wilson Dam to the new bridge across the Tennessee River between Florence and Muscle Shoals when the bridge was completed. New signs will be posted to alert drivers of the truck restrictions. Signs directing trucks to the new bridge, as well as black and yellow warning signs announcing closures to all traffic for maintenance or icy conditions during winter months will be located on River Road, Reservation Road, and Wilson Dam Road. TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer, and is completely self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states. |
